Alessia Russo named England women's player of the year
Arsenal forward Alessia Russo has been voted England women's player of the year after scoring five goals in 10 appearances during the 2025-26 campaign.
Arsenal forward Alessia Russo has been named England women's player of the year for the second time, having previously won the award two seasons ago. The 27-year-old has been a central figure in the 2025-26 campaign, featuring in all 10 of England's matches and scoring five goals.
Russo's latest goal came last week in England's 3-1 victory over Greece in the first leg of their 2027 World Cup play-off semi-final. She netted the team's third goal in that match.
The award is voted for by fans, and Russo beat Chelsea duo Lucy Bronze and Hannah Hampton to the honour. Reacting to the recognition, Russo said it was particularly special because it came directly from the supporters, and she expressed gratitude for their backing while also thanking her teammates for their role in her success.
England will host Greece in the second leg of the play-off semi-final at Leicester's King Power Stadium on Tuesday. Russo is expected to be involved as the team looks to secure progression in the qualifying campaign.
The forward's consistent performances for the national team have made her a key player under the current setup, and her goal-scoring contributions have been vital in England's recent fixtures.
Fans have taken to social media to praise Russo's achievement, with many highlighting her importance to the team and expressing delight that her efforts have been recognised by the supporters' vote.
