Billy Gilmour is on the verge of earning his 50th cap for Scotland as they host Slovenia in Nations League Group B1 on Tuesday. The 25-year-old midfielder is set to reach the milestone after playing a key role in new head coach Sebastien Pocognoli's first victory, a 2-0 win in North Macedonia on Saturday, where he assisted Kieron Bowie's opening goal.

Gilmour, who made his Scotland debut in 2021, described his career as having "ups and downs" due to injuries, including a knee problem that ruled him out of this summer's World Cup. He has since established himself at Napoli, winning Serie A in his first season, and is now enjoying regular starts for both club and country under Pocognoli.

Pocognoli has encouraged Gilmour to take more advanced positions, similar to the role Scott McTominay occupied under previous head coach Steve Clarke. Gilmour welcomed the challenge, saying he is happy to play anywhere and that being on the ball allows him to be a threat. "It's nice to hear that he wants me to play in a more advanced role," he said.

The Scottish supporters are excited by the team's aggressive, front-foot style under Pocognoli, according to Gilmour. He noted that the group is creating chances and enjoying their football, though he stressed it is still early days. Slovenia coach Bostjan Cesar praised Gilmour as a "very good player" and "the engine" of his team, indicating he will be a key threat to contain.

Gilmour played down the significance of his 50th cap, calling it "overall, it's another game," but admitted to excitement. He also acknowledged the achievement of captain Andy Robertson, who earned his 100th cap in Skopje. Now one of the more experienced players, Gilmour is ready to pass on advice to younger squad members as Scotland continue their Nations League campaign.
