Carrick Seeks Clarity on Man City Case as Premier League Rivals React

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick says he has personal questions about the Manchester City financial breach case, while rival managers urge patience and a swift resolution.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has expressed lingering questions over the Manchester City financial rule breach case, saying it has affected him personally. An independent commission found City guilty of multiple Premier League financial regulation breaches between 2009-10 and 2017-18. City have appealed, with a verdict not expected until early 2027 if strict guidelines are followed.

Carrick, who was on the pitch at Sunderland when Sergio Aguero's 2012 title-winner sealed City's first Premier League crown, and later finished runner-up to City as a player in 2018 and as a coach in 2020-21, said retrospective medals cannot replace the feeling of winning in the moment. He called for a speedy resolution, describing the situation as unprecedented with a huge impact.

Fans have weighed in: a ticker banner at Old Trafford, initially displayed in 2000 to count years since City's last trophy, has been updated to show 50, marking the years since City's 1976 League Cup win before Sheikh Mansour's takeover. The banner will be on show for Tottenham's visit.

Other managers offered contrasting views. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, a former City assistant, said the titles are 'absolutely not tainted' and that he trusts the club, while respecting the ongoing appeal. Liverpool's Andoni Iraola and Chelsea's Xabi Alonso both stressed patience. Iraola called uncertainty bad for everyone; Alonso said the panel should be allowed to assess sanctions independently.

Everton's David Moyes, whose club were docked points in PSR cases, said it looks terrible that Everton were punished while other matters from nearly a decade ago remain unresolved, hoping they are not being singled out. Nottingham Forest's Oliver Glasner, whose club were also docked points, said if someone cheats they must be punished, and hoped for the integrity of the game and a final word soon, though he noted the lengthy process.
