Celtic Win Revived Tennent's Sixes After 33-Year Absence
Celtic beat Rangers 5-4 in the final of the revived Tennent's Sixes at Braehead Arena, but Rangers had earlier won the derby 7-1.
The Tennent's Sixes returned to Glasgow after a 33-year break, with Celtic defeating Rangers 5-4 in an exciting final at Braehead Arena. The tournament had been held by Partick Thistle since 1993, and Celtic took the crown in the revived event.
The six-a-side pitch was laid over the ice rink normally used by ice hockey team Glasgow Clan, creating unusually chilly conditions. Players had to squeeze through saloon-style doors for substitutions and risked being hit by the ball from a bench positioned practically on the ice.
The weekend was relatively tame in terms of physical play, with only one red card: Frazer Wright's crunching tackle on Morgaro Gomis in St Johnstone's game against Dundee United. That challenge was reminiscent of a feisty Sunday league match, at least until the final.
A notable feature was the 1990s MLS-style penalties. When a penalty was awarded, the player had 10 seconds from the halfway line to take a shot, with mixed success.
Rangers had earlier claimed derby bragging rights with a convincing 7-1 win over Celtic on Saturday night. Led by Barry Ferguson, Martyn Waghorn scored five goals to help Rangers secure their third derby win of the season across all competitions. Dundee United and Hearts also won their respective derbies. Celtic gained revenge in the final, with Gary Hooper scoring the winner—the first time Rangers had trailed in the entire tournament.
