Cesar Azpilicueta retires after 20-year career, credits education for success
Former Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta reflects on his retirement, his educational pursuits, and his legacy at Stamford Bridge.
Cesar Azpilicueta has retired from professional football after a 20-year career, most notably captaining Chelsea to several titles. The 37-year-old spent last season at Sevilla and is now focusing on family and leisure, stating he needed a break after two decades of constant travel and competition.
Azpilicueta, who began at Osasuna and also played for Marseille, joined Chelsea in 2012 as a relatively low-profile £7m signing. He described the club's winning culture as transformative, saying, "Chelsea made me who I am." He adapted to multiple positions under different managers, embodying consistency and dedication.
His passion for education was evident when, before the 2021 Champions League final, he studied for an MBA instead of napping. He lifted the trophy after captaining Chelsea to victory over Manchester City. Azpilicueta holds diplomas from Harvard Business School and the PFA Business School, and he credits his studies with helping him lead during crises such as the Covid-19 pandemic and the club's ownership transition.
Since leaving Chelsea in 2023, Azpilicueta has not returned to Stamford Bridge but follows every game and hopes the club returns to its winning ways. He expressed confidence in manager Xabi Alonso and the current squad, and he has been tracking Reece James's development as captain. Supporters have reacted warmly to his legacy, with many calling him one of Chelsea's greatest leaders.
Azpilicueta has not ruled out a future role as a sporting director but is currently committed to his family and enjoying activities like golf. He plans to return to Stamford Bridge one day, though not in playing capacity. As he put it, "I left Chelsea, but Chelsea will always stay in my heart."
