Pierce and Shea Charles starred in Northern Ireland's dramatic Nations League win over Georgia, with Shea scoring a 99th-minute winner after Pierce saved a penalty.
Northern Ireland began their Nations League B Group 2 campaign with a dramatic win over Georgia in Tbilisi on Friday, thanks to a 99th-minute goal from Shea Charles. The late strike secured Northern Ireland's first ever away win in the Nations League and their first competitive clean sheet away from home since Pierce Charles' 2024 debut against Belarus.
Goalkeeper Pierce Charles, 21, was instrumental, saving a penalty from Ballon d'Or nominee Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and making several other smart stops. His performance earned him player-of-the-match honours. Shea Charles, 22, scored the winner and delivered a commanding midfield display, though he felt he should have scored more.
Manager Michael O'Neill praised both brothers, calling them 'brilliant'. He said Pierce's distribution and save were crucial, while Shea was 'colossal' on the ball and physically. The 60 or so visiting fans witnessed a memorable away day.
Pierce credited pre-match research for his penalty save, while Shea backed his brother, saying the save was key to the win. Shea also noted that facing top international players has helped his transition to the Premier League with Fulham.
Northern Ireland now face Hungary at Windsor Park on Monday, aiming to build on the momentum. Shea expressed excitement and confidence, saying the team is in a good place and eager to get another win in Belfast.
