Ferguson Says Bologna Exit Was Never Close, Keeps Rangers Return in Mind

Lewis Ferguson has stated that leaving Bologna this summer was not close, despite reports linking him with a return to boyhood club Rangers. The Scotland midfielder, 27, said he considered his future after the World Cup but ultimately remained in Serie A.

Ferguson, who was released by Rangers at 14, built his career through Hamilton Academical and Aberdeen before joining Bologna in 2022. He has captained the club since 2023 and led them to their first Coppa Italia in over 50 years in 2025.

Last season, starts became sparse under Vincenzo Italiano, with just 17 league appearances, prompting speculation about a move. However, Ferguson cited a fresh start under new manager Domenico Tedesco during pre-season and has since seen further managerial changes with Raffaele Palladino. He noted three new managers in two months, including Sebastien Pocognoli with Scotland.

Ferguson has played every minute of Bologna's five Serie A games this season and is under contract until 2028, with an option for a further year. He expressed his contentment at the club, saying he has loved every moment and is focused on continuing his journey there.

On the Rangers link, Ferguson acknowledged his family's deep ties: his father, Derek, and uncle, Barry, both played for the club, with Barry later captaining and managing at Ibrox. In July, Rangers manager Derek McInnes, who worked with Ferguson at Aberdeen, spoke of an "obvious link."

Ferguson admitted his boyhood dream of playing for Rangers remains but declined to discuss it while contracted to Bologna. He said a future move might or might not happen, but it is always in the back of his mind. Supporters have reacted with a mix of understanding and longing, with some hoping a return materialises, though such sentiments are fan opinion rather than confirmed fact.
