Fernandes: Ronaldo remains Portugal's greatest symbol despite squad exit
Bruno Fernandes backs Cristiano Ronaldo as Portugal's biggest icon after the 41-year-old left the squad, while coach Jorge Jesus focuses on the Norway match.
Bruno Fernandes has publicly supported Cristiano Ronaldo after the 41-year-old forward left Portugal's squad this week upon learning he would not start against Denmark in the Nations League. Portugal won that match 4-2 without him, but Ronaldo's international future now appears uncertain.
Ronaldo, who has scored a record 146 goals in 234 caps and helped Portugal win Euro 2016 and two Nations League titles, departed after coach Jorge Jesus informed him he would not be in the starting line-up. The former Real Madrid and Manchester United player was an unused substitute in the 2-1 away win over Norway before leaving the camp.
Speaking at a Portugal news conference on Saturday, Fernandes said he had spoken with Ronaldo and stressed that Ronaldo will always be the greatest symbol of the national team and Portuguese football. The Manchester United midfielder called for unity and respect for all sides, insisting there are no divisions within the squad despite outside noise.
Coach Jesus, who previously managed Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, described him as a symbol of Portugal and said there would be time to discuss the situation after Sunday's game. He emphasised his focus on the team and the upcoming opponent, Norway, whom he rated as one of Europe's five best teams.
Portugal top Group A4 with nine points from three matches and host Norway on Sunday in Porto. They finish the group phase next month with a home game against Denmark on 14 November and a trip to Wales on 17 November. A top-two finish would secure a quarter-final spot in March, with the semi-finals and final scheduled for June.
Ronaldo's absence has sparked debate among supporters, with some backing Fernandes' call for unity and others questioning the forward's role in the team. Fernandes urged the country not to divide itself, saying Ronaldo deserves respect regardless of personal preference.
