Northern Ireland's women's team begin their play-off journey for a first Women's World Cup appearance against Portugal at Inver Park on Friday (19:30 BST). Managed by Michael McArdle, the squad has been affected by injuries and includes five new players, but there is said to be quiet confidence ahead of what could be career-defining matches for some.

Norwich City defender Natalie Johnson described Brazil, the host nation, as the ultimate destination for any footballer. She said the potential reality of reaching the tournament provides ample motivation, but stressed the team is taking it one game at a time and believes nothing is impossible. Johnson added that the squad has a good balance of experience and youth and is determined to get something from the tie.

The route is demanding. As one of the lowest-ranked European sides in the play-offs, Northern Ireland must overcome Portugal, then face Croatia or Iceland, and likely an inter-continental play-off to reach Brazil. Portugal, ranked 28 places higher by FIFA, beat Northern Ireland twice in Euro 2025 qualifying, but Johnson pointed to the home pitch as a leveller and expects a technical, fast-paced opponent.

Birmingham City defender Rebecca Holloway, a survivor from the Euro 2022 squad, welcomed the squad's transformation. She said the new generation is exciting and that experienced players must help the newcomers play with confidence and freedom. Holloway noted the gap with Portugal is closing, citing a narrow 2-1 home defeat in 2024 after a 4-0 away loss as evidence of progress.

The team drew inspiration from watching Northern Ireland's men's side hold Georgia to a 0-0 draw on Monday, a result that kept Michael O'Neill's team top of their Nations League group with eight points from four games without conceding. Holloway said the men play with youth, energy and no fear, and hopes the women's young players adopt the same attitude for Friday.
