Northern Ireland Held to Goalless Draw by Hungary in Nations League
Northern Ireland's defensive resilience continued with a 0-0 draw against Hungary in Belfast, but attacking struggles persist without Conor Bradley.
Northern Ireland played out a 0-0 draw with Hungary in the UEFA Nations League at Windsor Park on Monday, extending their impressive defensive record upon their return to the second tier. The visitors, led by Dominik Szoboszlai, managed their first shot on target only in the 90th minute, as the hosts secured a second consecutive clean sheet in the group.
Manager Michael O'Neill praised his team's effort, saying there is a lot to be positive about after two clean sheets in the group and eight in the last ten games in Belfast. The defensive solidity was maintained despite the absence of Daniel Ballard, who suffered a hamstring injury in Tbilisi. Ruairi McConville stepped in alongside Ciaron Brown and Tom Atcheson, with Brown particularly earning O'Neill's acclaim for his reliability and attributes.
However, the attacking side remains a work in progress. According to Opta, Northern Ireland's expected goals (xG) of 0.55 was their lowest in a Nations League game since September 2022. Former striker David Healy, speaking on BBC NI, criticised the poor set-piece delivery, noting that Balazs Toth easily gathered several corners. Jamie Donley led the line but had few opportunities, while Isaac Price and Patrick Kelly supported from behind, with Kelly hitting the bar in the first half.
The absence of Conor Bradley, sidelined with a serious knee injury since January, continues to be felt. Northern Ireland have scored 24 goals in Bradley's last 16 caps but only six in the nine games without him. O'Neill acknowledged the limited attacking options, pointing to younger players like Kieran Morrison, Ceadach O'Neill, and Braiden Graham who lack international experience.
Fans have expressed mixed reactions on social media. Some supporters praised the defensive organisation and the team's ability to thwart star players like Szoboszlai and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, while others voiced frustration at the lack of creativity and goal threat. As one fan noted, the draw feels like two points dropped given the opportunity to secure a win at home.
Northern Ireland will look to build on their defensive foundation as they continue their Nations League campaign, but solving the attacking puzzle without Bradley remains O'Neill's primary challenge.
