Northern Ireland's Young Side Beats Ukraine 3-0 in Nations League
Northern Ireland secured a convincing 3-0 win over Ukraine in the Nations League, with manager Michael O'Neill praising his young team's performance and potential.
Northern Ireland delivered an impressive 3-0 victory over Ukraine in their Nations League clash on Friday night in Trnava, Slovakia. The starting lineup had an average age of just 22, the youngest for Northern Ireland since World War II, highlighting the team's youthful exuberance under manager Michael O'Neill.
Ciaron Brown, the only player over 25 to start, opened the scoring in the ninth minute from Ruairi McConville's knockdown. A superb cross from 19-year-old Kieran Morrison, making his first start, led to Isaac Price doubling the lead. Brown then added his second with a header that evaded goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk, sealing the win. This was Northern Ireland's biggest away success in five years and a third consecutive clean sheet.
O'Neill singled out defenders McConville and Tom Atcheson for praise, saying they have "no ceiling" and are ready for the next level. He also commended Brown's growth into a senior role, noting his tough three full matches at this level. The victory, missing key players like Conor Bradley and Ethan Galbraith, was described by former international Stephen Craigan as potentially "a seismic night" for the young group.
With four goals scored and none conceded, Northern Ireland sit three points clear at the top of League B2. They host Georgia on Monday, aiming to end the quadruple-header unbeaten. Topping the group would secure promotion to League A for the first time and a five-team group for Euro 2028 qualification with a play-off fallback.
Isaac Price, who scored his first international goal in over a year, emphasized the togetherness of the squad. Supporters have reacted positively to the performance, with many expressing optimism about the team's future on social media, though some caution that consistency will be key.
