Pocognoli Faces Selection Calls as Scotland Host Slovenia
After a first win in North Macedonia, Scotland coach Sebastien Pocognoli must reshuffle for the Slovenia match, with Scott McKenna suspended and fatigue a factor.
Sebastien Pocognoli secured his first win and first goals as Scotland head coach in North Macedonia, but attention quickly turns to Tuesday's Nations League finale against Slovenia at Hampden Park. Slovenia arrive after a narrow 2-1 loss to group leaders Switzerland, while Scotland opened Pocognoli's tenure with a goalless draw in Slovenia last month.
Pocognoli must make at least one change because Scott McKenna was sent off late in Skopje. McKenna, who had been an ever-present under Pocognoli, is suspended. Jack Hendry, available after his own suspension, is expected to return in central defence alongside Luis Binks and Stephen Welsh, who impressed in North Macedonia. Luke Graham also made his debut from the bench and did not look out of place.
Captain Andy Robertson, who earned his 100th cap and was relentless going forward, is likely to continue at left-back, despite Josh Doig providing fresh legs. On the right, Ben Gannon-Doak's ability to track back and attack may keep him in the role, with Aaron Hickey, Nathan Patterson and Colby Donovan also options.
The midfield diamond that has shone in the first three games is set to remain. Billy Gilmour and Lewis Ferguson are expected to sit deep, with John McGinn ahead of them. McGinn, who scored a penalty in North Macedonia, will feel he answered recent critics. Lennon Miller may again miss out, while Josh McPake and Kristi Montgomery face longer waits for debuts.
Up front, Kieron Bowie's first Scotland goal likely cements his starting place. Oli McBurnie, still without a goal in 19 caps, contributed many fine touches and lay-offs in Skopje, possibly keeping Robbie Ure out despite the latter's promise. McBurnie could be used in a withdrawn left role, with McGinn mirroring on the right, rather than in a front two.
Supporters are invited to share their own starting XI, but Pocognoli's final selection will only be known an hour before kick-off. The match is the last for Scotland in the current international window.
