Pocognoli Faces Selection Calls as Scotland Seek First Win in Skopje

Scotland head coach Sebastien Pocognoli is under pressure to deliver his first win against North Macedonia, with key selection dilemmas in defence, midfield and attack.

BETAIGO EditorialUpdated:

Sebastien Pocognoli is still searching for his first victory as Scotland head coach after a goalless draw in Slovenia and a 3-0 home defeat by Switzerland. The Belgian takes his side to Skopje to face North Macedonia, the lowest-ranked team in Nations League Group B1, who have already lost to Switzerland and Slovenia. With Jack Hendry suspended following his early red card against the Swiss, at least one change is enforced, but Pocognoli must decide whether to stick with his preferred three-at-the-back system or alter it.

In defence, Swansea City's Stephen Welsh, Dinamo Zagreb's Scott McKenna and Brondby's Luis Binks have all featured without disappointment, while Luke Graham could make his debut. Aaron Hickey, rested against Switzerland due to his injury record, may return, with pundits on BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound suggesting he could move to right central defence to accommodate winger Ben Gannon-Doak. That would likely mean Nathan Patterson drops out after a difficult night against the Swiss. Captain Andy Robertson is expected to return at left wing-back after being replaced by Josh Doig late on Tuesday.

In midfield, the absence of Scott McTominay means Billy Gilmour and Lewis Ferguson are likely to continue, but John McGinn's place is under scrutiny after two less influential displays. Up front, Oli McBurnie has impressed and would consider himself unlucky to miss out, though Robbie Ure and Kieron Bowie offer fresh options. In goal, Angus Gunn has faced criticism for two of Switzerland's goals, but alternatives Scott Bain and Liam Kelly have limited claims.

Supporters have been urged to share their preferred Scotland XI, reflecting the debate over the best lineup. Pocognoli had promised to give players opportunities during this four-game camp, and the trip to Skopje is viewed as must-win for Scotland's slim hopes of finishing top or second in the group. The match will test whether the coach's system can finally deliver a victory.
