Ramsdale's fall: from Arsenal title race to Southampton fourth choice
Aaron Ramsdale, once an England international and PFA team of the year pick, is now Southampton's fourth-choice goalkeeper at 28 after a series of setbacks.
Aaron Ramsdale's decline from Arsenal's Premier League title challenge to Southampton's fourth-choice goalkeeper has been stark. In April 2023, his error in a 3-3 draw with Southampton helped shift momentum to Manchester City in the title race. Four months later, Arsenal signed David Raya, and Ramsdale lost his starting spot after just four league games in 2023-24. He was sold to Southampton for £25m in August 2024 after being an unused substitute for England at Euro 2024.
At Southampton, Ramsdale made 30 league appearances as the club finished bottom of the Premier League with 12 points, the second-lowest tally in the competition. He conceded 66 goals, more than any other goalkeeper in 2024-25, though some supporters praised him for keeping scores down in a struggling side. It was his fourth relegation, following Chesterfield, Bournemouth and Sheffield United.
A loan to Newcastle United for 2025-26 also failed to reignite his career. Ramsdale kept just two clean sheets in 23 appearances across all competitions, featuring 12 times in the Premier League, and neither he nor Nick Pope could secure the number one spot. He also conceded seven goals in a 7-2 Champions League last-16 defeat by Barcelona, the most he has ever let in in a single game.
Now 28, Ramsdale is behind Daniel Peretz, George Long and Jamie Jones at Southampton. Manager Tonda Eckert said honest conversations have taken place and that Ramsdale has been professional, while the goalkeeper is said to have a good relationship with staff and an affection for the club. He believes he can fight his way back into the first team and is willing to wait until at least January, when the transfer window opens.
Ramsdale declined summer loan offers from England, Spain and Italy, partly due to family reasons after his wife gave birth to their second child. Former Bournemouth teammate Asmir Begovic told BBC Sport that Ramsdale will find the situation “very difficult and frustrating” and that some factors are out of his hands. Begovic added that Ramsdale must train well, stay fit and be ready if an opportunity arises, ideally in January.
Supporters have generally remained fond of Ramsdale, and he is described as a popular dressing-room figure. His ambition is to help Southampton win promotion back to the Premier League and play in the top flight again, but for now he must wait for a chance at St Mary's.
