Robbie Savage appointed Peterborough United manager: what to expect
Robbie Savage takes over at Peterborough United, bringing a relentless, attacking style and a strong fan connection from his time at Macclesfield and Forest Green.
Peterborough United have appointed Robbie Savage as their new manager, succeeding Luke Williams. The 51-year-old former Wales midfielder arrives after a rapid rise through the non-league ranks, having started at seventh-tier Macclesfield FC just over two years ago. Director of football Barry Fry predicted an exciting chapter, while chairman Darragh MacAnthony said the board were impressed by Savage's hunger to revive a squad sitting second bottom of League One.
Savage's only full season at Macclesfield ended in promotion to National League North with 109 points and 109 goals. He then joined National League side Forest Green Rovers in July 2025, guiding them to the play-offs in his sole full campaign. Forest Green currently sit 13th after 11 matches, with four wins, three draws and four defeats.
According to BBC Radio Gloucestershire's Forest Green reporter Paul Furley, Savage's football is best described as "relentless". Savage himself stated he loves entertaining, attacking football and would rather win 5-4 than 1-0. Furley noted Savage favours a 4-2-3-1 formation and, in his only full season at Forest Green, goals scored rose from 69 to 82 while goals conceded increased from 42 to 52. On the touchline, Furley said Savage is energetic, keeps team talks short and actively engages with supporters.
With Peterborough second from bottom and the January transfer window nearly three months away, Savage may need patience. Furley added that Savage frequently signed players after defeats, often loanees or lower-league talents given full-time opportunities, which can lower the immediate success rate but benefits the wider game. Savage will continue his punditry work, including co-hosting BBC Radio 5 Live's 606, with an appearance on Sunday.
Supporters at his former clubs highlighted his impact off the pitch. Forest Green fan Damian Ockham praised Savage for being brilliant with fans, open and honest, though he noted some supporters speculated he struggled to trust players amid heavy turnover. Macclesfield supporter Mark Sharpley called Savage's legacy at Macc "absolute", citing record-breaking points and goals, adding that while his departure left a sour taste, he raised the club's profile and was always happy to chat.
