Cristiano Ronaldo has said he should be punished for leaving Portugal's Nations League camp, but made clear he is not retiring from international football. The 41-year-old captain departed after being an unused substitute against Norway and learning he would not start against Denmark.

In a statement, Ronaldo said the Portuguese Football Federation must assess the consequences of his actions and punish him, adding that he believes the punishment should not be reduced. He said he had already apologised but acknowledged that actions have consequences.

Portugal manager Jorge Jesus said on Sunday that the door remains open for Ronaldo to play for the national team. Ronaldo responded that he would like to continue representing Portugal provided he is physically fit, playing with his team and hopefully scoring goals, and said he will be available after his suspension period ends.

Ronaldo, who plays for Al-Nassr, has scored 146 goals in 234 Portugal appearances, both world records, and helped the country win Euro 2016 and the Nations League twice.

Supporters have reacted with a mix of disappointment and understanding, with some praising his willingness to accept consequences while others question his decision to leave the camp. The episode leaves his international future uncertain despite his stated intention to return.
