Scotland Coach Pocognoli Faces Selection Choices for Switzerland Clash
Sebastien Pocognoli takes charge of his first Scotland home game against Switzerland on Tuesday, with decisions to make after an encouraging goalless draw in Slovenia.
Sebastien Pocognoli will manage his first home match as Scotland head coach when Switzerland visit Hampden on Tuesday, following a goalless draw away to Slovenia in his opening game. The Belgian's debut squad featured eight uncapped players, two of whom—Robbie Ure and Stephen Welsh—started in Ljubljana.
In Slovenia, Scotland lined up with three centre-backs: Jack Hendry and Stephen Welsh alongside Scott McKenna, while Andy Robertson and Aaron Hickey operated as wing-backs supplying strikers Oli McBurnie and Ure. Despite dominating the second half, Scotland could not break the deadlock, with only Ben Gannon-Doak and Kieron Bowie used from the bench. Pocognoli later said his team's counter-press and high defensive line worked well after halftime, and he praised the clean sheet but stressed the desire to win.
Switzerland represents a tougher test, having won 3-0 in North Macedonia. Pocognoli may consider changes. Gannon-Doak added threat when introduced late and could start, though he is not a natural wing-back. Hearts winger Josh McPake is another attacking option. In midfield, Billy Gilmour impressed on debut, especially when pushing forward, while John McGinn was subdued as a number 10. Ryan Christie offers energy if a change is made.
Up front, McBurnie, Ure and Bowie are all in form. Ure hit the post on his debut and won 18 duels, the most of any Scotland player, while Bowie missed a late chance. McBurnie, the most experienced, is yet to score in 17 caps. Pocognoli must decide whether to keep two strikers against Switzerland or add speed or an extra midfielder.
