Scotland Player Ratings: McBurnie Battles But Hendry Red Costs Scots in 3-0 Loss to Switzerland

Scotland fell 3-0 to Switzerland in the Nations League after Jack Hendry's early red card, with Oli McBurnie earning praise for his battling display.

Scotland suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Switzerland in their second Nations League match, played in Sebastian Pocognoli's first home game in charge. The loss was compounded by an 11th-minute red card for defender Jack Hendry, who was beaten for pace by Dan Ndoye and brought him down, leaving Scotland to play with 10 men for the majority of the game.

Hendry's dismissal forced an early substitution, with Kieron Bowie making way for Stephen Welsh. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Scotland managed to hold out until Ricardo Rodriguez's powerful free-kick opened the scoring. Angus Gunn was beaten on his side by that effort, and although he made good saves either side of half-time to deny Ndoye, he was again beaten by power for Zeki Amdouni's third goal.

Among the Scotland players, Oli McBurnie stood out with an impressive battling performance as a lone striker after Bowie's departure, causing problems for the Swiss defence. He received the highest rating of 7. Scott McKenna and Andy Robertson were also relatively solid, earning 6s, while Luis Binks, Nathan Patterson, Lewis Ferguson, Billy Gilmour, John McGinn, and substitutes Ryan Christie, Ben Gannon-Doak, Robbie Ure, and Josh Doig all received 5s. Hendry was given a 2 for his costly error.

Switzerland's attacking threat largely came from wide areas, with Ndoye's pace causing constant problems for the Scottish defence. Patterson, in particular, struggled to contain the winger, and it was Ndoye's cross that set up Nico Elvedi for Switzerland's second goal. The visitors controlled the midfield, limiting Scotland's chances to create anything meaningful going forward.

Scotland now face questions about how to better integrate key players like John McGinn into the game, and how to cope with pace in wide areas. The team will need to regroup quickly as they look to bounce back from this disappointing result. Fans have been voicing their opinions on the player ratings, sparking debate over who impressed and who fell short in a difficult night for the Scots.
