Scotland's Home Defeat to Slovenia Exposes Pocognoli's Tactical Questions
Scotland fell 2-1 to Slovenia at Hampden, leaving new head coach Sebastien Pocognoli still without a home win and raising doubts about his system and the team's fight.
Scotland suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Slovenia at Hampden on Tuesday, a result that leaves new head coach Sebastien Pocognoli still searching for his first home win. The performance was limp and lifeless for long spells, and Slovenia deservedly took all three points after twice exposing Scotland's defence.
Pocognoli, known for favouring a back three, switched formation and personnel after Slovenia took a 2-1 lead, but the changes appeared desperate rather than designed. Scotland's midfield was overrun, and the defence was repeatedly cut open. Slovenia's Aljosa Matko equalised after Ryan Christie had opened the scoring, and Danijel Sturm scored the winner after Matko squared the ball from the right. Earlier, Jack Hendry had to block an Adam Cerin shot, and Andy Robertson made a lung-busting clearance to deny Zan Vipotnik.
The defeat damages Scotland's bid for second place in their Nations League group, which would give them a favourable pot two seeding for December's Euros draw. Pocognoli admitted the result was a setback, and captain Robertson said his team was out-fought. Supporters at Hampden voiced their frustration at the final whistle, with many taking to social media to question the manager's tactics and the players' intensity.
Pocognoli will need time and the return of Scott McTominay, but November's fixtures away to Switzerland and at home to North Macedonia now carry greater importance. The head coach has much to ponder after a night that exposed both his system and his squad's resilience.
