Scottish Premiership returns: Reedijk's Hibs debut, Celtic's slump and top-six battles
The Scottish Premiership resumes after an extended international break with a full weekend of fixtures, featuring Marink Reedijk's first match in charge of Hibernian, Celtic's bid to halt a three-game losing run, and a mid-table clash between Aberdeen and St Johnstone.
Domestic football returns in Scotland on Saturday after an extended international break, with all 12 Scottish Premiership clubs in action over the weekend. The pause came as the league was building momentum, and teams must now quickly rediscover their rhythm for a busy card.
At Ibrox, Rangers host Kilmarnock after six consecutive wins. The break may have provided useful rest, but it also interrupted their flow. Kilmarnock, managed by Neil McCann, arrive with recent positive domestic results, including a win away to Hibernian and draws against Aberdeen and Hearts. The touchline meeting between Derek McInnes and McCann adds intrigue.
The weekend's standout storyline is Marink Reedijk's first match as Hibernian manager, away to Dundee United at Tannadice. The Dutchman, appointed late last month, has not had a transfer window. Hibs sit third bottom, a point above Falkirk and two above Kilmarnock. Reedijk inherits a squad with Premiership experience and young talent such as striker Owen Elding, and has promised "brave, intense and committed" football.
Hearts, under Wouter Vrancken, aim to end a stutter that included defeat at Falkirk and a draw at Kilmarnock when St Mirren visit Tynecastle. St Mirren have lost their past three. Dundee, who beat Motherwell before the break under Steven Pressley, travel to Falkirk and are level on points with St Mirren, three behind Hearts.
Celtic have lost three straight in all competitions, including league and cup defeats to Rangers, yet Martin O'Neill's champions remain two points clear at the top. Their Sunday trip to Motherwell, who have also lost three in a row under Alfred Johansson, is a chance to stop the rot before Thursday's Europa League match at Benfica.
The final fixture sees Aberdeen host St Johnstone at Pittodrie, with both on eight points after seven games and Saints ahead on goals scored. Aberdeen are unbeaten in four, while St Johnstone scored late to draw with Falkirk. With Hearts or St Mirren guaranteed to drop points, either side could close the gap.
Supporters will be watching closely for how teams emerge from the break, particularly Hibs fans eager to see Reedijk's approach.
The coming weekend could set the tone for the weeks ahead across the division.
