Stephen King Donation Boosts Buckie Thistle's Fundraising Efforts
Buckie Thistle receive a donation from author Stephen King to help with their financial struggles, following a previous connection from his book.
Buckie Thistle, a Highland League club, have received a donation from renowned horror writer Stephen King to aid their fundraising campaign. The club expressed gratitude for what they described as a "fantastic" contribution aimed at securing their future.
The relationship between King and Buckie Thistle began six years ago when the author featured the club in his book, If It Bleeds. At that time, King donated two copies of the novel to the Moray side, one of which was auctioned off. This latest donation continues that connection, with interim president Daniel Farquhar telling BBC Scotland that although the sum remains undisclosed, it is a "nice little figure" that will help cover player and operational costs.
Buckie Thistle have faced financial difficulties, with monthly operating costs of around £20,000 exceeding their income. The club has been working to reduce expenses after long-standing president Garry Farquhar stepped down earlier this year for health reasons. In the past five to six weeks, they have received approximately £55,000 in donations, which Daniel Farquhar called "phenomenal."
In early 2024, Buckie Thistle gained wider attention when they played Celtic in the Scottish Cup, losing 5-0 in Glasgow. That match brought temporary spotlight, but the club's day-to-day financial challenges persist.
According to Farquhar, King's email response expressed hope that the donation would inspire others to contribute. Supporters have welcomed the news, with some noting on social media that it highlights the club's community spirit, though these are fan opinions and not verified facts. The club remains focused on stabilizing its finances and ensuring its continued operation.
