Wales Aim to Build on Norway Win Against Denmark to Boost Euro 2028 Hopes
Wales face Denmark in Cardiff on Sunday, looking to secure back-to-back wins and improve their Euro 2028 qualifying seeding.
Craig Bellamy's Wales host Denmark at Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday, aiming to build on Thursday's Nations League victory over Norway. That win was Wales' first in League A this campaign, following defeats to Portugal and Denmark. Victory over Denmark would give Wales consecutive wins over higher-ranked opponents for the first time in over a decade.
The result carries significant weight for Wales' Nations League status. Currently bottom of Group A4 on goal difference, they trail Denmark and Norway. A win would keep their fate in their own hands ahead of November fixtures in Norway and at home to Portugal. The revised relegation format means only the two worst fourth-placed teams are automatically relegated, with the others entering play-offs. Wales are currently the best fourth-placed side, so a win would boost hopes of avoiding the play-offs and even a second-place finish.
Beyond pride and prize money, the match has major implications for Euro 2028 qualifying. Seeding for the draw in Belfast on 6 December is based on Nations League overall ranking, with the top 12 teams seeded first. Avoiding a bottom finish would likely make Wales a top seed, keeping them away from stronger nations. As co-hosts, Wales will go through standard qualifying, with two reserve places for hosts who fail to qualify automatically.
Bellamy has stressed the importance of avoiding relegation, which Wales suffered without a win in their previous League A campaign under Rob Page in 2022. Supporters recognise the significance of the Denmark clash, with many viewing it as a chance to maintain momentum and strengthen the team's position for future tournaments.
