Wales' Nations League Window: Key Lessons and Challenges

Wales endured a tough four-game Nations League window, losing three matches, but remain in control of their fate as they aim for third place and a seeding boost.

Wales' return to Nations League A brought a harsh test, with three defeats in four games under head coach Craig Bellamy. A win over Norway offered hope, but losses to Portugal and twice to Denmark highlighted the step up in quality. Bellamy summed up the window simply as "tough."

The new four-game format drew criticism from Bellamy, who argued it favors larger nations and disrupts preparation. Injuries to key players like Harry Wilson and Joe Rodon exposed a lack of squad depth. Former striker Iwan Roberts pointed out that substitutes often come from League One, making it difficult to change games.

Substitutions and selection also raised questions among supporters. In the Denmark defeat, Bellamy's delay in bringing on Kieffer Moore and his decision not to use Dan James drew scrutiny. Fans were further frustrated by Bellamy's comment about finding "the next Harry Wilson," as no new caps were awarded during the window. Wilson's absence was keenly felt, with Wales failing to score in three of their four matches.

Despite the struggles, there were positives. Ethan Ampadu impressed with mature performances, earning praise from pundits. The win over Norway showed Wales can compete at this level. Midfielder Jordan James noted the high quality but believes the team has proven it belongs.

Wales still have their destiny in their hands. They sit third before facing Norway away and Portugal at home in November. A third-place finish would likely require one more win or two draws, based on historical averages. It would also boost their seeding for Euro 2028 qualifying and avoid relegation to League B.

The campaign continues to test Wales' resilience, but with key players potentially returning and lessons learned, Bellamy's side will aim to secure their status and build momentum for the future.
